What's mandatory year-round
Article R.416-19 of the Highway Code requires two items, everywhere in France, in every season:
| Equipment | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Warning triangle | As soon as a stopped vehicle poses a danger (bend, hilltop, reduced visibility). |
| High-visibility vest | To put on before exiting a vehicle stopped on the road or its shoulder, after an emergency stop. |
Missing either is punished by the fine set for 4th-class offences.
Winter in mountain areas
Since mandatory winter equipment was introduced, from November 1 to March 31, certain municipalities in 34 départements (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura massif, Pyrenees, Vosges massif) require additional equipment, marked by dedicated signs at the entrance to the zone.
For a private car, the choice is free between:
- At least two chains (metal or textile snow socks), for the driven wheels.
- At least four approved winter tyres, identifiable by the "3PMSF" marking (a snowflake in a three-peak mountain). "All-season" tyres only count if they carry this marking.
Outside the season, if you choose chains or snow socks, they must stay in the vehicle, ready to use, as soon as your route enters an affected zone.
What's recommended, without being mandatory
A fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit are advised but not required for a private vehicle. In addition, for a long trip or winter driving:
- A blanket or a survival blanket.
- A flashlight and a phone charger.
- A small water reserve and some non-perishable food.
- A folding shovel, useful in snow.
If you're stranded for several hours
A prolonged motorway standstill, for example during a snow event, is prepared like a small mobile self-sufficiency plan:
- Stay in the vehicle rather than walking off, unless instructed otherwise by emergency services.
- Signal your presence with hazard lights and the triangle if conditions allow it safely.
- Manage fuel: run the engine intermittently for heating, never continuously if surrounded by snow (risk of exhaust gas buildup).
Mistakes to avoid
- Storing the vest in the boot. It must be within reach in the cabin, not in a boot you open after stepping onto the road.
- Entering a mountain area without checking your equipment. A check can come before the snow falls.
- Running the engine continuously, surrounded by snow. The exhaust can get blocked and let dangerous gases build up in the cabin.
- Never testing your chains before the first mountain trip. A snowy roadside isn't the place to learn how to fit them.
A car checklist that reminds you
LASTLINE can help you:
- track a car kit checklist, ticked once and reviewed when needed;
- keep your practical guides accessible even without network.
LASTLINE doesn't verify your car equipment's compliance: only an inspection can confirm that.
