What FR-Alert exactly is
FR-Alert is a population alert system, operational everywhere in France since June 2022. It complements existing systems (sirens, media, institutional social networks) by allowing alerts directly via mobile phones. It's used for any major event justifying protective action:
- Natural events: flooding, storm, cyclone, fire, tsunami, volcanic eruption.
- Biological and chemical: pollution, gas leak, nuclear incident.
- Health-related: epidemic, food safety incident.
- Technological and industrial: serious network accident, industrial incident.
- Public safety: serious event, terrorist act.
How it works technically
FR-Alert combines two technologies:

To leave the lines available for emergency services organising the response.
The notification displays even on a locked phone, with sound and vibration. It doesn't appear on a phone that's off or in airplane mode.
Your personal data
The state has no access to individual phone geolocation via FR-Alert: the system relies on broadcasting via relay towers in an area, not on tracking a specific device. No registration, no app, and no advertising pass through this channel.
Mistakes to avoid
- Disabling emergency alerts in phone settings. That's precisely the fastest channel in case of immediate danger.
- Ignoring the message because "nothing's happening outside". Some dangers (chemical, health-related) aren't visible.
- Calling family or emergency services out of reflex before even reading the instruction, risking saturating the network.
- Sharing the message without reading it in full, risking relaying an incomplete instruction.
